Cycle and hike through Schagen and the surrounding area

Anyone who wants to discover the real Holland by bicycle or on foot should visit the municipality of Schagen. Walk or cycle through the dunes, along the beach, over the West Frisian Omring dyke, and the extensive meadows are also wonderful for walking or cycling.

You can connect to the routes of the Noord-Holland path, or choose a route from the Walking network Noord-Holland or the Cycling network. Use the junction network to plan a route. Take a break at one of the cosy restaurants and cafes along the way.

 

A walking route for everyone!

Walking network Noord-Holland

Take healthy, sporty and interesting walks with the Noord-Holland Walking Network. The various walks lead through beautiful landscapes, ribbon villages and nature reserves, over farmland paths, old dikes and past historic locations

Noord-Hollandpad

The Noord-Hollandpad is a long-distance hiking trail divided into different stages. Stage 4 runs partly through the municipality of Schagen. A walk through bulb fields, polder land and over old grass dikes. Peace, space and an open landscape predominate here.

Landschap Noord-Holland

Landscape Noord-Holland has a number of beautiful walking routes through the various nature reserves. Go for lovely walks in dunes, forests, moors, over dikes, bridges, ferries and exciting strolling paths.

City walk Schagen

View the rebuilt Schagen Castle and other 17th-century buildings in the center. Stroll through the old streets and take a nice city walk with or without a guide. Take a break in one of the many restaurants along the way.

Haringhuizerroute

The Haringhuizerroute (8.4 km) starts at Schagen Station, leads through the open south-east side of the city to the atmospheric ribbon village of Haringhuizen with its 15th-century church, over the Muggenburgerweg and through the Slikvenpolder.

Barsingerhornroute

The Barsingerhorn route (9 km) runs through the open polder on the east side of the city. On country roads, a grass dike and an old tram track to the restored tram station of Barsingerhorn.

Tolkeroute

The Tolkeroute (6 km) starts at the castle and goes through the old mound area on the south side of the city. Over old tramways, partly unpaved country and dike roads, waterways and mound paths.

Neskaagroute

The Neskaag route (11 km) goes through the north of the city and the Neskaag, over the Stainer canal path and old country roads. Outside the breeding season, you can walk down the Westfriesedijk at the Keinsmerwiel to take the tug of war ferry to the Varkenspad. During the breeding season there is an alternative route.

The black route from Starting point Callantsoog

The black route from Startpunt Callantsoog (9 km) runs over the beach and through the polder. The route is marked in two directions with black arrows.

Small Tour of Waarland

The Small Tour of Waarland (6.5 km) goes through the old village and via the dead-end Oostkade to the high pedestrian bridge ("kwakel") over the Boomervaart. The route runs over the grass quay along the Canal and back to the village on the unpaved Waardkade, on the south bank of the canal. Dogs are not allowed on the farmland paths.

The real Holland route

The big five, as we also call them, but then in the Kop van Noord-Holland. Discover the beautiful polder landscape, the beautiful farmhouses and windmills and the historic West Frisian Omringdijk. In the spring you cycle along colorful blooming tulip fields.

West Frisian Omringdijk

The West Frisian Omringdijk used to protect people and animals from the salt water. Now this 126 kilometer long monument meanders through the West Frisian landscape along polders, windmills, farmhouses and cultural surprises.

Stolpenroute Schagen

This route bridges the distance between the West Frisian town of Schagen, which is surrounded by fat clay, and the rugged coastal area with poor soil behind the dunes. This difference is also clearly visible in the two museum farms that lie along this route.
