Schagen is located in the West-Friesland region in the top of Noord-Holland. The city of Schagen is said to have originated in the 10th century. Schagen has a rich history, with the market as a central meeting place. Near the market you will find many unique and traditional buildings, such as the Vreeburg museum where you can learn more about the history of the city. In the past, a dike had to ensure that Schagen could cope with the rising sea levels. Many parts of the so-called Omringdijk can still be found around the city. In 1415, Schagen was granted city rights and was handed over on loan to Willem van Beieren, bastard of Holland. Schagen Castle is a well-known building that dates back to this time: around 1440, the first lord of Schagen had an existing stone house converted into a square moated castle.
